Biography
Phil Powell has served as Executive Director of the Indiana Business Research Center since July 2022. He is the Daniel C. Smith Faculty Fellow and Clinical Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy on the Bloomington campus. Previously, Powell was Associate Dean of Academic Programs on the Indianapolis campus.
Under his leadership, undergraduate direct admits grew 54%, new joint programs with the medical school were formed, and the Kelley School collaborated with the Indy Chamber to launch a small business accelerator. Before joining the dean's office, Powell was faculty chair of online graduate programs in Bloomington which earned a #1 U.S. News & World Report ranking during his tenure. Powell has earned two dozen teaching awards and is a published scholar on topics in economic development.
He lives with his family in Brownsburg, Indiana. A native of Nashville, Tennessee who earned his B.A. in economics from South Carolina and Ph.D. in economics from Vanderbilt, he speaks Spanish, loves college football, and enjoys country music.
